Day One: Collage of Me |
Purpose
Students will understand how to make their own collage that represents themselves via interests, hobbies, goals, and more by using various magazine pieces they cut out. The magazines will be available to them, and they will also be given tape, glue sticks, scissors, and construction paper in order to create their collages. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation about collages, students will effectively define what a collage is and how it differs from a montage or mixed media piece.
Technical Objective: Given scissors, tape, glue sticks, construction paper, and a variety of magazines, students will skillfully collage together the magazine pieces. |
Assessment Criteria
- Student defines what a collage is and how it’s different from a montage or mixed media piece
- Student skillfully collage together magazine pieces
- Student creates a collage that represents at least one aspect about themselves
Day Two: Pastel Emotion Monsters |
Purpose
Students will understand how to use oil pastels by means of blending and layering onto their paper, and will also understand how to discuss emotions and how every student experiences them in a different way by creating their own visualizations of various emotions using oil pastels. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation about various emotions, students will successfully discuss the emotions conveyed by other students.
Technical Objective: Given a demonstration on how to apply, layer, and blend oil pastels, students will convincingly draw a visualization of an emotion they resonate with the most. |
Assessment Criteria
- Student successfully discusses the emotions conveyed by other students

- Student skillfully uses at least two colors to blend together to represent an emotion
Day Three: Our Mark in Video Games |
Purpose
Students will understand how to layer their drawings by incorporating both a foreground and background in their video game image. They will also understand how to identify various art styles in video games and incorporate certain styles into their own work. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation about custom character designs, students will skillfully be able to identify and discuss various video game qualities.
Technical Objective: Given construction paper and thick/thin markers, students will be able to use marker to convincingly show themselves within a video game world |

- Student skillfully identified and discussed various video game qualities
- Student used marker to convincingly show themselves within a video game world
- Student applied both a foreground and a background into their drawing
Day Four: Handprint Personality |
Purpose
Students will gain an understanding about the difference between fine art and pop art. Students will also gain an understanding of how to apply paint to paper using proper brush techniques. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation about painting and pop art, students will knowledgeably identify the difference between pop art and fine art.
Technical Objective: Given paints, paint brushes, and paper, students will choose a sheet of paper that is their favorite color, have the teacher assist them in painting their hand and applying it onto the paper, then clearly paint subjects that relate to their chosen topics. |

Day Five: Paper Scrap Portraits |
Purpose
Students will understand the general aspects of facial proportions and be able to create abstractions out of the features that they see on each other. Students will have a variety of magazines, newspaper, and paper scraps to choose from and tape/glue those pieces onto a sheet of paper to create the abstract portrait montage of their partner. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation about montages and abstraction, students will knowledgeably identify the differences between a normal portrait and an abstract portrait.
Technical Objective: Given various different types of paper scraps, students will construct a portrait of their partner and skillfully apply a method of abstraction. |

Day Six: Surreal Self-Portraits |
Purpose
Students incorporate their knowledge of how to use various art tools that were used these past six weeks into a self-portrait, as well as including a surreal twist to it however they wish. Students will be given magazines/newspaper, paper scraps, markers, pastels, and paint to use on a large sheet of construction paper to create their surreal self-portraits. Conceptual Objective: Given the presentation on mixed media, students will accurately identify various tools used on mixed media art pieces.
Technical Objective: Given various art tools and construction paper, students will skillfully construct a self-portrait that represents their inner-self while still being recognizable. |
